Sage

She had made some pretty grievous mistakes in her life, but as Sage wrapped her arms around Mason Tucker’s neck, she had the fleeting realization that this very well might be the biggest.

She had no business kissing him, surrendering to the attraction that had been simmering on a low burn inside her for all the months they had worked together on his home.

Mason Tucker was not the man for her.

It had nothing to do with the fact that he used a wheelchair, though she would guess that would be the first thing some other women might use as an excuse.

She personally didn’t care about that, especially having witnessed firsthand the deep, admirable bond between her friend Anton and his wife Rachelle. They made it work, facing challenges together.

No, the fact that he used a wheelchair seemed inconsequential to the other truth resonating through her. Sage suddenly knew in her heart that if she gave in to these feelings she had been nurturing inside all these months, she would wind up devastated.

Mason wasn’t open to love. He had showed that in a hundred small ways.

Sage felt as if she had spent her entire life chasing after unavailable men who would never fully allow her into their hearts.

She was doing it again now with Mason.

She didn’t want to think about any of that. Not now, when this gorgeous man was kissing her like she was all he had ever wanted.

She had never known this kind of all-consuming hunger, this deep ache that left her trembling and unsure and feeling as if her body wasn’t her own.

What was she doing? This wasn’t her. She had learned her lesson and no longer let her emotions or her needs control her, especially not after the disastrous events of a decade ago.

She had been a heedless, naive girl who had thought she was in love with the handsome, charming Sawyer Danforth, and her thoughtless behavior had significantly altered numerous lives.

Genevieve Beaumont’s planned marriage would have been the society event of the year. Instead, she had broken her engagement to Sawyer Danforth and had been bitter and angry at Sage for a long time because she slept with Genevieve’s fiancé.

Of course, years later Gen would thank Sage for being the catalyst for her to finally become a strong woman who made her own choices in life and didn’t care what anyone else thought about them.

Instead of marrying the well-connected Sawyer, Gen had fallen in love with a wounded, angry bear of a man, Dylan Caine, who clearly couldn’t be more enamored of his lovely wife.

That wouldn’t happen for Sage, with Mason, for a hundred different reasons.

He was also her client. Kissing him like this was not only foolish to her own heart but, more to the point, was blatantly unprofessional.

She slid away a little, feeling disoriented as the room seemed to spin wildly.

To her shock, Mason looked dazed, his pupils wide and unfocused. She felt exactly the same, as if all she had known and wanted out of life had suddenly been tossed outside into the Colorado snow.
